High grade Model 1860 staff and field officer’s sword and scabbard with fancy embossed and gilded gold mountings, pearl grip and inscribed “Presented to Gen’l Stillman F. Kneeland, By a few of his Friends, Jan. 1st, 1897”. Sword is signed “Ridabock & Co., New York” and marked “Made in France”. General Kneeland’s career began in 1863 when he enlisted in the 1st Vermont Heavy Artillery; he saw action at Spottsylvania and Cold Harbor and was wounded at battle near Petersburg. He served in the New York National Guard and rose through the ranks where he retired as Judge Advocate-General for the state of New York, Jan. 1st, 1897. The sword is in very good to fine condition with approximately 75-85% of its un-cleaned and toned gold gilding, nickel scabbard gone frosty but still retains most of its nickel, pearl scales are in good condition, hilt a little loose, blade very good with good sharp etching and some pitting.
