Sharps Model 1874 Sporting rifle, .40 caliber 2-5/8” case, double set triggers (working at time of description), period Davenport 30” heavy octagon barrel (approximately 16 pounds in weight), brown patina, wood stocks, S/N C54001, formerly from the famous Bill Gary Collection (sold by Little John’s in 2014) with factory letter indicating this gun was invoiced to Captain John Mix of the U.S. Army stationed at Fort Laramie, WY on May 6, 1875. Additionally, there is a second 1993-dated letter from Dr. Moore to the late Mr. Gary indicating that Davenport barrels were used by the likes of Walter Cooper and other dealers when a barrel needed changing. Dr. Moore’s letter confirms the identity and placement of the markings. Additionally in the letter from Dr. Moore concerning the Sharps records, it is mentioned that Captain Mix was an Army Officer stationed in several places throughout the West and Northwest and received a dealers discount on many Sporting Rifles that he ordered during the 1870’s. He was apparently selling these to fellow officers or to Western stores not having a dealer status with the Sharps Rifle Company. There is also included a letter from noted collector, the late Gerald Mayberry on this rifle. This Sharps is in overall good to very good condition displaying an even dark brown patina to metal surfaces, crisp action, sharp markings and good bore; the wood is good with an old worn sliver loss at the left front side of the forend. Also included with the documentation are the National Archives service records and other information on Captain Mix who fought in the Civil War followed by years on the frontier during the Indian War period. A very historic and identified Buffalo Gun! (Antique). Est.: $5,000-$10,000.
