U. S. Model 1850 officer’s sword with fancy brass mounted scabbard and hilt; period inscribed “Presented to Capt. Thomas C. Kendall by the members of Co. B., 21st New Jersey Vols., July 1st, 1863”. The left side of the guard is bent but is otherwise good with sharkskin grip showing some minor wear and aging with slight losses and good tight brass wire wrap. The scabbard shows most of its original blue/brown finish with some minor scratches and normal aging. The blade shows a standard etched-type “U.S.” with American Eagle and is in good condition with just normal aging and slight erosion. The blade shows a “Clauberg, Solingen” marking. Accompanied by copies of National Archives military and pension records indicating Kendall enlisted on Aug. 29, 1862, as a Captain, was commissioned into Co. B, 21st New Jersey Infantry on Sept. 15, 1862, was present at the Battle of Fredericksburg and fought at the Battle of Salem Heights, VA., where he was taken prisoner after being severely wounded in the right leg requiring amputation. He was subsequently released and mustered out of service at the expiration of his enlistment term on June 19, 1863. Pension records indicate he passed away on March 19, 1897. Est.: $3,000-$6,000.
