Early Henry lever action rifle, S/N 1502, .44RF caliber, 24” barrel, brass frame, wood stocks; directly from the family of Civil War Union soldier Lafayette Wands (1824-1890), 95th Illinois Infantry, to our consignor through Little John’s May, 2012 auction. Accompanying this Henry is a three ring binder including the lineage of the gun’s movement through the Wands family, additional copies of information on the history of several Wands family members as well as copies of U.S. National Archives military and pension records. Lafayette Wands enlisted as a Private on Aug. 6, 1862, was mustered into Co. “A” of the 95th on Sept. 4, 1862, and was mustered out on Aug. 17, 1865. The 95th Illinois Infantry served primarily in the Southern theater of the Civil War having been involved with Grant’s operations against the Confederacy including the Vicksburg campaign, battles in Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama including participation in the battles of Kennesaw Mountain, Chattahoochee River, Atlanta, Ezra Church, Jonesboro and Lovejoy’s Station. On April 12, 1864, at Red River, Louisiana, Lafayette Wands was wounded in action with a gunshot to the left knee but later returned to his unit. The condition of this Henry rifle is overall good to very good condition displaying approximately 20% original blue mixed with a browning patina, some scattered light to moderate erosion, pinprick pitting; good sharp barrel address, crisp edges with beautiful frame showing a honey color patina with sharp edges and tight sideplates. The rear sight dovetail has been filled with a handmade brass blank. An antique and genuine to-the-period oversized buckhorn sight has been placed in the rear sight dovetail and shows three peen marks to hold the sight tight. The stock is good to very good with 30-50% varnish, some scratches, mars, one or two significant gouges or marks and great wood-to-metal fit. The butt stock and butt plate match; the hammer and lever show mottled case hardening. The front swivel has been removed and the original screws are in their proper positions in the barrel; the rear swivel is in its proper location. The action is good, the bore is good to very good. A 4-piece Winchester cleaning rod of a later vintage is in the butt trap. An exceptionally good and untouched early Henry with great Civil War history! (Antique). Est.: $20,000-$30,000.
