Important historical Sharps Model 1874 Sporting rifle descended in the family of Western lawman and Arizona Ranger C. H. Farnsworth; .40 caliber, 2-5/8” case, 30” octagon barrel, double set triggers (in need of adjustment at time of description), weathered wood stocks, S/N 160751; overall good condition with an even dark brown patina of barrel and receiver with receiver showing some traces of original case colors under the hammer and scattered silver toning; crisp action, good markings and very good bore; butt stock shows classic weathering from carry and exposure to elements; wear to forend and an old pin repair to a crack approximately 4” from the rear right side of the forend. Accompanied by a factory letter noting this rifle was invoiced at the Bridgeport factory on October 23, 1877, to A. W. Gray of Great Bend, Kansas; features are confirmed and weight of gun placed at 11 pounds, 6 ounces. The letter further states that Gray was a dealer in hardware, stoves and agricultural equipment. Provenance: Original letter dated July 19th, 2007 from John Kleinman stating he sold several items he had in his possession from his grandfather, C. H. Farnsworth, to noted collectors Brad Witherell and Richard Burdick. There is also an original letter dated Feb. 16, 2010, from Mr. Burdick confirming he had bought a grouping of items, including this Sharps rifle, from Mr. Kleinman. A great historic Western lawman’s gun directly passed down through his family! (Antique). Est.: $6,000-$12,000.
