Colt SAA revolver, .45 caliber, 5.5” barrel, blued and case hardened finish, checkered hard rubber grips with 5 old carved notches in the bottom of grips (3 on left side, 2 on right), S/N 335608; with May 23, 1968 signed and notarized document describing this Colt by S/N was carried by Sherman Rinehart, Manager of the Cananea Companys’ Quiteca Ranch in Sonora Mexico during the time of the Pancho Villa uprising. The affidavit also notes “It was often necessary to fight off the bandit raiders to protect the ranch and herds, as Villa was especially bitter against Americans after the United States withdrew their representatives to him in 1916 and recognized the Carranza government. Mr Rinehart left Mexico and went to Tucson, AZ where we were married in 1920. He was later appointed U.S. Customs’ Inspector at Lochiel, Arizona and when on duty, carried this Colt .45. Mr. Rinehart died in 1925 without explaining the five notches in the grip of this gun”. (signed by Mrs. Gertrude Birch; formerly Mrs. Sherman Rinehart).
