Very early Colt U.S. Cavalry SAA revolver, Ainsworth inspected, .45 caliber, 7.5” barrel, grey patina with scattered surface spots of erosion and light pitting with some cleaning of the backstrap and left frame areas, wood grips, S/N 1438; overall good + condition with a good bore, crisp action, good markings and very good grips. Accompanied by a Kopec letter that notes in summary no direct information from the National Archives re: this serial number but close numbers were revealed to have been issued to a mixture of 6th, 8th and 10th Cavalry. Kopec notes the abovementioned cleaning and a small chip of walnut is missing from the left grip panel where the ordnance sub-inspector’s cartouche would have been positioned. He concludes “It is my opinion that this revolver is totally original with the exceptions noted. We could find no indication of purposeful fakery anywhere on this nice example. We have also noted that the serial number of the barrel is not exposed. Most of the observed revolvers within this series like #1416, #1418, #1475
