Colt U.S. Cavalry SAA revolver, .45 caliber, 7.5” barrel, wood grips, S/N 17525; overall good to very good condition with scattered traces of blue and case colors in protected areas with balance of gun gone to a grey patina; crisp action, sharp markings, good bore and good grips; “J” sub-inspector marks for W.W. Johnson. Accompanied by a Kopec letter with gold seal stating in summary that “. . . this revolver’s serial number falls between #17492 and #17586 in these National Archives records. Both of these cited examples belonged to the Seventh Cavalry. Serial #17492 had been issued on October 3, 1876, while the revolver #17586 belonged to ‘Troop C, 7th Cavalry’ as of May 14, 1883. Our subject revolver’s serial number therefore falls well within a group of these revolvers which had been issued to the newly re-organized Seventh Cavalry just after the famous Custer Battle.
