Unsigned oil painting on canvas attributed to William Henry Powell, possibly a study preceeding for a major work entitled "Desoto Discovering the Mississippi" which is displayed in the Capitol Rotunda in Washington DC, and regarded as a National Treasure. Believed to be painted by William Henry Powell while in Spain or France circa 1850 preceeding his monumental size work. Back of painting is inscribed with note: "Scott; please remember that the painting is an attribution based upon all the best evidence available and its origin with the founder of Walker Museum in Minn signed SMK" Impressive and a fine work of master quality. 70" x 52", well framed and recently cleaned and restored to excellent condition.
