Highly desirable Sharps Model 1874 Sporting rifle in old lined wooden case with accessories and ammunition, .44 caliber, 30” octagon barrel stamped “Freund & Bro” on top barrel flat behind rear barrel sight; blued and case hardened finish, double set triggers (working at time of description), globe front sight and a folding peep tang sight, wood stocks, S/N 158558; overall very good to fine condition displaying majority of muted original blued finish on barrel and areas of original case colors on receiver, crisp action, sharp markings, very good to fine bore and very good to near fine wood stocks showing some scattered old minor mars and scratches from carry and storage. Accompanied by two factory letters, one dated Nov. 26, 1976, the other dated March 17, 1988, both signed by Dr. R.L. Moore, confirming the above-noted features and indication the weight of the gun was 11 lbs. 14 oz. with a list price of $42 having been invoiced on December 28, 1876, to Sharps General Agent, E.S. Harris of 177 Broadway, New York City. Also included with this lot is a handwritten letter dated May 30, 2010, from collector John Dutcher noting he purchased the Sharps from E.M. (Al) Zalud, North Plate, Nebraska during the early to mid-1970’s and further notes “this rifle is Freund marked . . .” The wood case (49” x 9.5” x 4” overall) is in worn but overall good condition with a Sharps Rifle Co. bullet mold, a powder measurer, a two piece cleaning rod and other reloading equipment. The case also contains 67 rounds of ammunition in a long wooden bullet block. (Antique). Est.: $15,000-$30,000.
