W. J. Jeffery box lock double rifle, .450 #2 Nitro caliber, Serial #16248. The rifle is in very good overall condition with 26” chopper lump barrels with a full-length filed rib and one standing, four folding leaf express sights. The barrels have been re-blacked during the period of use with light pin prick pitting and a faint, but legible desirable barrel of address of 13 King Street, London. The barrels are marked Krupp Steel, 80 grains of Cordite, 480 grain bullet and are serialized to the action. The rifle includes a 2nd set of modern, Krupp steel barrels which were re-chambered from .458 Winchester Magnum. The 2nd set are also 26” in length, feature a filed quarter rib with a single standing sight and are in very good condition. Both sets of barrels have good bores and are tight on face. The scalloped receiver, features bushed strikers and has gone to grey toned case hardening with ornate scroll engraving with ribbons providing 90% coverage. The finely checkered wood stock is in very good condition with an Anson and Deeley fore end and a silver escutcheon plate in the butt reading, “BOET”, the South African word for brother. The butt stock ends with a leather covered butt pad providing a 15” LOP to the front trigger. The rifle is nicely cased in a brass trimmed, oak and leather case with green suede interior. The case includes two leather slings, horn block and ebony handled screw driver set. This is an outstanding pre-WWI engraved Jeffery double with two sets of barrels and a top of the line case. Made during the golden period of African hunting, Jeffery moved from the King Street address in 1914. Est.: $14,000-$20,000. (C+R).
