A fine elaborately engraved 19th century German 20 gauge double barrel shotgun by J. Raidl in Stockerau, with fine twist Damascus barrels. Barrels are 25.5 inches and gun is 41” overall. Stepped, olted back action locks are finely engraved with dog chasing a boar on left lock and an antlered stag on right. Hammers are engraved and action is deeply almost relief engraved with scrollwork. Breech engraved with a bear. Steel triggerguard engraved with recumbent stag and doe. Elaborate steel matchbox engraved with a lion devouring a deer. Highly figured walnut butt with horn finger rest and cheekpiece. Condition overall is good with wear tocheckering. Action is perfect and bores are surprisingly good. The nozzle of the right hammer has been repaired. This fine German 20 gauge was recently deaccessioned from the famous J.M. Davis Museum in Claremont,Oklahoma and carries the brass Davis Museum tag #7810. A percussion shotgun by Raidl in Stockerau was sold as lot 954 on 26 April 2010 by Cowans for $2875.00. Est:$1750-3500
