Rare Ithaca “Sousa” Grade 12 gauge single barrel trap shotgun, Serial #400842 with a 34” barrel with a full-length ventilated rib. Both sides of the receiver show high relief engraving with an inlayed Gold Dog surrounded by the finest deep scroll engraving, multi-color gold inlay on the bottom of the frame on a duck landing on a pond and a mermaid on the trigger guard. Beautifully checkered and carved hard wood stocks complete the shotgun. The shotgun is in fine to excellent overall condition showing 96%-99% finish on the barrel and frame with slight evidence of normal aging. The interior jeweling and polish are bright and crisp. The stock has been lightly and professionally refreshed but not sanded and is still proud at all contact points. A blue and red jewelry quality enameled emblem has been inlayed into the fore end at the time of manufacture. The emblem is similar in style and composition to those found on several artifacts belonging to Lionel Barrymore that we have examined, including a fancy traveling bar. Many of Mr. Barrymore’s collectibles and arms were sold in Southern California, as he died in Van Nuys in 1954.
This Sousa grade is consigned by the descendants of W.C.Mertz who recently passed away at nearly 100 years of age. Mr. Mertz owned the Winchester Trap and Skeet range in Los Angeles. Unfortunately we have no documentation as to the “B” initial but this is a very rare and special ordered high grade trap gun that few could afford in the pre-World War II era. The gun is full-stocked with a 14 ¼” LOP to the end of a solid rubber pad. Est.: $8,000-$16,000. (Modern).
