A rare and attractive late 16th early 17th Century (?) Continental European iron shield, German. The shield is 21 and 1/2 inches in diameter and weighs 6.6 pounds with fluted, etched, and chiseled 3.5 inch central spike. Not a parade shield but made for use decorated with 24 brass rosettes similar to those used to decorate Munich Town Guard morions. Piecrust rim is folded with slash decoration guaranteeing this is not cast buthammered. Raised central section. Interior shows great age. Exterior mostly smooth age patina with ancient surface pitting. Remnants of leather straps on interior. At some time an armorer fitted a triangular ring so theshield could be hung possibly as part of a funerary achievement. Showing great age and would enhance any collection of armor. Est.: $3000-$6000
