Spanish Colonial era varqueno or writing desk and document cabinet with fancy metal work on front showing stylized lions. Nicely inlaid in bone with carved accents. Set on gold gilted locking drawers, the condition is good with losses and some damage. Consigned by the estate of prominent arms dealer and antaquarian Eric Vaule who obtained them in Peru circa 1960's from legendary Mohica Guyo. Guyo was the benefactor and main donor to the biggest museums in Peru and his family were among the most important early pioneers from Spain settling in Peru. The Guyo family preserved the Pre-Columbian artifacts and antiques that became the National Collection. Mr. Vaule stated to Little John that the Varqueno's were the best and only pair he ever had an opportunity to buy in 50 years of traveling in South America. Also, the pair were the property of an ancestor of Guyo who was a governor and royal Spanish official.
