U.S. staff & field officer's sword Model 1850. Imported slightly curved WK&C manuf. German blade is 30-3/4” long and 11/8” at the ricasso. Blade is acid etched on the obverse with panoply of arms, scrolled leafdesign, and “E. PLURIBUS UNUM” ribbon and the American Eagle along with W.H. Horstmann & Sons, Philadelphia. The reverse is etched with scrolled leaf design, panoply of arms, and “U.S.” The spine of blade is etched“Iron Proof”. The blade has thin fullers along the spine and a wide fuller for ¾’ length of the blade. Some spotting and pitting especially near the tip, but otherwise in good condition. The “D” shapedbrass guard has scroll leaf open work, and oak leaves depicted at base of the pommel. Guard has portepee slot. Sharkskin covered wood grip, has remnants of wire wrap. Overall 36-¼” long. No scabbard. The Model1850 Army Staff and Field Officers' Sword was carried by all members of staff departments, Field Grade officers of Artillery and Infantry, Company Grade Officers of Light Artillery, Staff Officers and Aides-de-Camp
