nteresting Model 1873 "Open Top" rifle with "Mystery" dust cover added post production, S/N 27856. This rifle shows a 24" octagon barrel, full magazine, crescent butt, factory trigger, large western buckhorn rear sight and blade front sight, leather covering with star pattern on the fore end along with ingenious and high quality dust cover and "Ears". The dust cover follows the action to open and close and in our opinion is superior to factory design. An article entitled "Winchester's Mystery Variation" by Dave Yancosky published in W.A.C.A. magazine in fall 1990 and discusses this specific rifle. Mr. Yancosky compares the rifle to the S.G. Bayes patent rifle and mentions similarities. This cataloger notes the "Western" sights and leather covering and the possibility exists a gunsmith like Fruend customized the rifle on order. In any case the dust cover is of the period and possibly unique. The rifle shows traces of blue mixed with a gray brown patina. Minor erosion and pitting. Good markings and address. Dings, mars, and scratches in the stock with some deep gouges in the butt stock. Good action and the bore is worn. (Antique) Est.: $2500-$5000
