Late 16th to early 17th century rapier with fancy chiseled and pierced pommel. Measures 50" overall with nearly 43" blade reduced slightly during period of use. The pommel shows 6 windows with chiseled figures in each with different figures of men in armor on horses and with weapons and each surmounted by a small head in separate windows at the top of the pommel. Nicely wrapped grip with steel wire and brass accents. No markings orsignature on the blade. Good to very good condition. The obvious question is why a plain sword has such a fine and fancy pommel? The "Turks Head" or nut that secures the blade shows no sign of being disturbed and we believe the pommel has always been with this sword. We theorize 2 possibilities for this fancy pommel on a plain sword. 1. The owner ran out of money and the pommel was "Showy" and the sword used for business. 2. Thepommel was kept from an earlier sword and retasked later when the owner had less cash for fancy armament as good elements were recycled since biblical times from battles. Est.: $2000-$4000
