Marcus Zelner in Wein signed Wheelock rifle with Johnaan Entzingr marked barrel circa late 17th century with enclosed wheel. Elaborately inlaid in bone with hunting scenes, florals, animals, and decorativemotifs attributed to Spitzer in the 19th century. The inlay is top quality and profuse and generally the best of its type though not period. The trigger guard is also a Spitzer era replacement. Measures 43 ½”overall with a 32” barrel in .50 caliber rifled. The metal is in good condition and all the lock parts are intact. The lock itself excellent quality with fine engraving by this premium maker. The stock is near fine with inlays almost 100% intact. Spitzer in Germany and a few other top European workman restored, fabricated, and ornamented arms for the castles and great halls of Europe. This would have been an expensive gun in the 19thcentury due to the extensive and high quality work. Martin B. Retting and museum tag attached by wire to the trigger guard. A beauty!
