Interesting Springfield Model 1903 .30-06 caliber U.S. Military issue rifle with star gauged barrel dated 1-38 and Springfield arsenal proofed, S/N 1406705. Milled steel butt plate, frame shows 3 tap holes for scope mount and fore end numbered D28179 near end. Mounted with Lyman receiver sight and target front sight. No stock cartouche or “P” in pistol grip, In range of national match rifles and snipers but no Springfield recordof this number. Rear sight removed and a possibility this was a National Match converted to sniper for WWII then back to Match rifle but no documentation. Very good plus to almost fine condition. Bright boreand mechanically excellent. Star gauged rifles in any case were ‘Special” and are desirable to collector’s. (C&R) Est.: $900-$1800+++
